Automated Mass Production of SOC Stacks

AMPS
Active

AMPS (Automated Mass Production of Solid Oxide Cells stacks) is a Horizon Europe project aimed at advancing, demonstrating and validating cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing processes for Solid Oxide Cell (SOC) technologies, including both fuel cells and electrolysers.
The project focuses on the development of automated production lines for SOC components and stacks, integrating high-speed manufacturing, advanced quality control and digital tools such as virtual twins to optimise production processes. The objective is to significantly reduce manufacturing costs and enable large-scale deployment of SOC technologies.

AMPS targets the entire SOC value chain, bringing together leading European industrial partners and research institutions to establish a dedicated and competitive European supply chain. Key objectives include automated production of cells and interconnects, high-speed stack assembly, and full component traceability, with a target cost below 800 €/kW at industrial scale.

Within the project, Politecnico di Torino contributes to techno-economic and environmental assessment of the manufacturing processes, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), safety analysis and optimisation of system deployment scenarios.

The project supports the scale-up of high-temperature electrochemical technologies, which are key enablers for hydrogen production and utilisation, as well as for decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as industry and heavy transport.
