SOFCOM was a European research project focused on the development and validation of innovative poly-generation systems based on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) fuelled by biogas.

The project aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating high-temperature fuel cell technologies within wastewater treatment plants, enabling the simultaneous production of electricity, heat and upgraded gas streams. A key aspect of SOFCOM was the coupling of biogas cleaning, energy conversion and CO2 management within a single system.

Activities included system design, modelling and experimental validation of SOFC operation under biogas conditions, with particular attention to contaminant removal and system efficiency. The project contributed to advancing the use of SOFC technologies for distributed energy generation and circular energy systems based on waste-derived fuels.
